Unfortunately, although you may be able to use a gamepad with Thief: Deadly Shadows, the game does not officially support the use of any type of game controller.
If you have one plugged in to your system and are experiencing any problems such as uncontrolled character movement or mouse scrolling, unplug it before playing Thief.
